Twenty-First Century Problems

A 10 track crossover jazz album (37m 7s) — released August 28th 2015 on DO RIGHT! MUSIC

Lauren Desberg entered the scene in 2012 with her 'Sideways' EP, produced by Gretchen Parlato. The EP features their duet of 'You Go To My Head', and Lauren's take on 'I Wanna Be Like You', receiving praise from NPR and airplay worldwide. Fusing classic material with the future soul production of Drew ofthe Drew, Twenty-First Century Problems is Lauren's first full length album, where she continues her project of combining the sounds of timeless standards and contemporary pop music.

Born in Los Angeles, Lauren was educated at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she recorded Sideways. In her teen years, she sang with a variety of ensembles including the Gibson-Baldwin Grammy Jazz Ensemble and The Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony, performing at The Monterey and Playboy Jazz Festivals. Now based in Harlem, Lauren's metropolitan surroundings can be heard in the seamless mixture of jazz, pop, and neo-soul contained in her full-length. Lauren stands alongside the next generation of jazz making it's way in NYC. The players that bring Twenty-First Century Problems to life are two time Grammy Nominee Taylor Eigsti on piano (Kendrick Scott Oracle, Chris Botti), Walter Smith III on tenor sax (Jason Moran), Corey Fonville on drums (Nicholas Payton, Christian Scott), and Chris Smith on bass.

In addition to her singular vocal work, Lauren's songwriting skills are on display on tracks like 'Lie To Me', 'Can't Stop The Show', and 'Try To Get Out'. These originals stand up strongly alongside American Songbook classics like Gershwin's 'He Loves And She Loves' and pop favourites like the Whispers' 'Rocksteady' and the Bee Gees' 'How Deep Is Your Love'. Combined with Drew ofthe Drew's soulful beat-heavy production, Lauren also gives her updated treatment to the work of eminent American singers like Ella Fitzgerald on 'Angel Eyes' and Nat King Cole on 'Never Let Me Go', but with vocal production that nods towards the futuristic in the vein of innovators like Robert Glasper.

Twenty-First Century Problems is a refreshed retooling of classic American music updated for the new generation by the new generation. Welcome to millenial jazz.
