In July 2023, at Frankie's Jazz Club in Vancouver, a stellar lineup of Canadian jazz musicians, curated by tenor saxophonist Ryan Oliver of the Cookers Quintet, graced the stage for two unforgettable nights. Alongside Brian Dickinson on piano, Neil Swainson on bass, and Terry Clarke on drums, Oliver aimed to capture the creativity, artistry and excitement of a live jazz performance featuring music rooted in the 1960s jazz landscape. Special guest, accomplished jazz, blues and gospel singer Dee Daniels joined the group for three selections including a soulful rendition of "Tryin' Times," originally written by Donny Hathaway in the late 1960s. The song's message of resilience and hope remains as relevant today as it was during its inception, speaking to the enduring human experience.
